The purpose of the evaluation is to certify that mariner applicant is capable of performing the tasks necessary during ordinary and emergency times aboard ship or vessel.
What are the tasks required of the mariner- to be performed without the need for assistance?
Under ordinary ship board functions:
- Ability to maintain balance and equilibrium while performing routine movement on slippery, uneven, and unstable surfaces
- Climb up and down vertical ladders and stairways between levels on ship or vessel
- Step over high door sills and coamings 24 inches in height. Move between spaces and compartments and through restricted openings of 24 inches
- Able to manipulate mechanical devices, opening and closing watertight doors that may weigh up to 55 pounds. Move hands and arms to open and close valve wheels in vertical and horizontal directions, rotate wrist to turn handles and to reach above shoulder height
- Lift, carry, push and pull load weighing at least 40 pounds to handle ship’s stores
- Perform general vessel maintenance requiring crouching by bending knees, kneeling by placing knees on the ground and stooping by bending at the waist. Able to manipulate various shipboard tools like spanners, valve wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers and pliers
Under emergency response:
- Emergency response procedures (i.e. escape from smoke filled spaces): able to kneel then crawl by moving body on hands and knees, feel by touching and distinguish differences in texture and temperature
- Stand on watch: able to stand on feet for up to four hours with minimal rest period to perform routine watch
- React to visual alarms: fulfill the eyesight standards for the merchant mariner, being able to distinguish object or shape at a distance
- React to audible alarms: fulfills the hearing capacity standards of the merchant mariner to hear a specified decibel sound at a specified frequency
- Reporting suspicious or emergency conditions: capable of normal and clear conversation to describe surroundings and activities to make verbal reports
- Firefighting activities: able to carry and handle fire hoses and fire extinguishers; able to pull an uncharged 1.5inch diameter, 5o feet fire hose with nozzle to full extension and to lift a charged 1.5 inch diameter fire hose to fire fighting position
- Abandon ship and use of survival equipment: ability, agility, strength and range of motion to put on a personal flotation device and exposure suit
